Born in Sydney in 1944, Dunn’s six decade-long career commenced with studying architecture at the University of New South Wales (UNSW). After studying sculpture at Sydney’s National Art School, receiving a NSW Travelling Art Scholarship (1966) and completing an M.Art in painting at London’s Royal College of Art, Dunn live and worked in London and Paris (1966-76). On returning to Sydney, and UNSW, he taught painting at Sydney College of the Arts (1977-88), was founding Director of the new College (1988-2001), Professor of Contemporary Art and Artist-in-Residence (2001-2010) and Emeritus Professor of Contemporary Art (2011–). These years included academic roles in Norway, Germany, India and Scotland. Dunn’s exhibiting career to date entails 122 international and national group exhibitions – including five international Biennales – and his 63 solo exhibitions at international and national public institutions and private galleries includes a survey at the Art Gallery of New South Wales (1992, toured to Monash University Museum of Art, 1994).
