M. Horton and D. Thomas, Present Day Art in Australia, Ure Smith, 1969, illus p 21 and on back cover of dust wrapper:
‘The Canto series, begun early 1964, was based on Ezra Pound’s series of poems, The Cantos. The circle containing the vertical band of colours represents for me the Chinese symbol of Infinity. The general epigraph to the Cantos, ‘In Great Praise’, represents my affirmation to people, places and things experienced. The Cantos as well as the Persian series do not simply relate experience but create experience. They are not a record of an event but are themselves the event’ Sydney Ball, op. cit. p 19
