Note from Ann Wookey: "The picture’s composition reflects Miller’s intrigue from around the mid 1930s when in London with the planar attributes of Braque’s early paper collages and Synthetic Cubist pictures... his use of black to segment the composition and outline forms is a feature of Still life (AW51A) and Fruit with comport and fruit (AW52), with such outlining known from the mid 1930s ... variations on the dark curvilinear form at the right crop up in Figtrees (AW64), Figtree series (AW70A) and Abstract (Figtrees) (AW70B): its inspiration, scenic drawings arguably made by the artist on his Spanish travels of 1935, which are held by the National Gallery of Australia."
