Winter Exhibition, Joseph Brown, 4 - 14 July, 1977, no. 75 Earth, Sea and Sky, Charles Nodrum Gallery, 26 March - 9 April, 2009, no. 8
John Reed, Australian Landscape Painting, Longmans, Melbourne, 1965, see p 11 for a very similar composition, also catalogued in Barrie Reid, Introduction, Modern Australian Art - a Melbourne Collection of Paintings and Drawings, Museum of Modern Art of Australia, Melbourne, 1958. This was basically the catalogue of the MOMA collection and included works by Blackman, Boyd, Brack, Hester, Nolan, Perceval, Tucker and Williams, with abstract paintings by Crawford, Sime and Johnson.
Artworks depicting the Australian landscape have a lot to say about our changing climate, whether they know it or not. Looking back in time through painted canvas or layers of colour on paper we can see a snapshot of history etched into the artwork. Much like the raw records set in ice or ringed in time through trees, we have an archive of our natural world, depicted through the eyes of an artist. These observations, transcribed in the work, are sources of reflection for our changing natural world. They are touchstones for particular seasons; some were periods in Australia’s history that witnessed extreme events, others more prosaic.
