Catalogue number: 12

oil on board

43.00 x 63.00

signed 'William Frater' l.r.

Note:

Frater painted a number of oils of the coast near Lorne, of which this would seem to be an example, though may be closer to Apollo Bay. There are seeds and dust in the paint, suggesting it was painted en plein aire. The Southern Ocean is a vast and wild sea stretching from the icy shores of Antarctica to the southern fringe of the Australian continent. Our nation’s highly changeable climate is influenced by the Pacific, Indian and Southern Oceans. Since the 1970s, storm tracks generated in the Southern Ocean have been slipping further south as the climate warms taking our rainfall with it. This has seen major rainfall declines in many parts of southern Australia, in particular the southwest of Western Australia, where water scarcity has led to the use of desalinsation plants for the city’s water supply.
