Note:

Loxton has traditionally, and rightly, been admired for his Alpine winter landscapes; the inherent whiteness and glare of the snow allowed full scope to his skills as a watercolourist. (CNG) Although Australian Alpine snow cover varies a lot from year to year, there has been a significant decline in average snow depth and cover since the 1950s, particularly in spring. As temperatures continue to warm, our alpine plants and animals communities are in real danger of quite literally being pushed off mountain tops, having nowhere to migrate to and no way of moving from or between these alpine islands. Under high greenhouse gas emissions scenarios severe reductions are projected, with snow becoming rare by late in the century, except on the highest peaks. The downhill skiing industry can adapt for a while with increased artificial snow generation, but this will not be an option for cross country skiing away from resorts. The Australian ski season could shrink by up to 80 days a year by 2050 under worst-case predictions for climate change. The biggest impacts will be felt at lower elevation areas like Mt Baw Baw and Lake Mountain in Victoria. (Climarte)
