122.00 x 152.00

signed & inscribed l.r. 'Nolan 1a sculpture / unique edition / White marble or bronze / Scale 2 metres High'

Provenance:

Phillips De Pury & Company, Sydney, 1999 lot 49;
Australian City Properties, 2000

Exhibited:

Sidney Nolan & Elwyn Lynn: A Joint Centenary, Charles Nodrum Gallery, 17 August - 2 September, 2017, No. 15

Note:

This is one of suite of large drawings made as studies for sculptures, only one of which was executed and is now in Perth. “The sculpture Man and Woman is the only large sculpture that Nolan completed from a commission to make 12 such sculptures. Maquettes for the other works exist, also a series of small sculptures of fine quality cast in gold. The drawings for the rest of the series of large works are still intact [of which the above is one]. Man and Woman was carved at Carrara in the marble mountains where Michelangelo worked. The system of manufacture was a traditional one used by, amongst others, Canova. … The first of Nolan’s large sculptures was extremely successful and he was justifiably pleased with it. Only ill health and then his death stopped him completing the series.”
Alistair McAlpine, 6 April, 2000
