Literature & references:

Anthony Fitzpatrick, Edwin Tanner: Mathematical Expressionist, Tarrawarra Museum of Art, 2018, exhibition catalogue, illus p. 49:
“From the mid-1950s, Tanner also worked through a series of highly schematic compositions which furthered his satirical campaign against regimentation and conformism…in the painting The Electrical Engineer’s Family (1956)… Tanner employs the format of a typical electronic circuit diagram to propose that human behaviour and relationships are hardwired in strict, organisational structures.  As the title suggests, the symbols of the various tubes and transistors are to be read as familial faces, here reduced to the role of sending and receiving signals; the input and output of information.” (Fitzpatrick, op. cit., pp 11-13)
