After a vigorous start in the 1930s, Atyeo left Australia in 1936 and produced little work until he took up painting again in the 1960s. His final decades were focused mainly on the international abstraction of the era – of which ‘Bedeck’ is a fairly typical example. Living in the south of France he had a limited presence in Australia: John Reed arranged a show at George’s Gallery in 1963 and Jennifer Phipps curated a survey show at Heide in 1982/83. Commercial exhibitions have since been held by Philip Bacon, Niagara Galleries, Golden Age, and Sophie Gannon.
