Literature & references:

BHP Collection catalogue;
G. Morrison, E. Cross, R. Millar & P.McCaughey, Michael Shannon - Australian Romantic Realist, Art Gallery of Ballarat, Retrospective Exhibition Catalogue, Ballarat 2011, see p. 70-73 for similar works - aerial views of abstracted cityscapes:
Urban Panorama, c. 1960 (Collection Art Gallery of Ballarat);
Original concept of the Victorian Arts Centre, 1963 (with Roy Grounds' projected buildings clearly depicted, though the painting employs a dual perspective to topographical effect);
The City, 1961, the most closely related in structure, concept and handling (collection of the Art Gallery of Western Australia); and
The City No 3, which explores a different perspective again - this time from the top of a tall building rather than from the air (collection Newcastle Art Gallery).

Unlike his late 1960s panoramic cityscapes which are all topographically specific (Melbourne, Sydney, San Francisco, etc.) these earlier works (the Art Centre excepted) remain strictly anonymous, their relentless, though slightly chaotic geometry concerning itself with the physical and psychological aspects of the city - and city living - in general.
