“Quite like vintage Shannon are the panoramic views of Albert Park and St Kilda and the rickety, dull reddish-orange assemblage of spars, poles, rectangles and notices that constitute South Melbourne Sports Ground; like most of his work, it possesses a vital fragility.”

 

Note:

In the 1870s, the low lying swamp between St Kilda Road and Middle Park beach was turned into Albert Park lake and a sports oval was built at the South Melbourne end of the surrounding park. The South Melbourne Cricket Club, formed in 1862, and the South Melbourne Football Club, formed in 1874, adopted the oval as their grounds and it soon became known as Lake Oval or Lakeside Oval. In the background of this painting is the grandstand built in 1926, after the previous stand burnt down. It was one of the first Melbourne venues to install electric flood lighting in the 1950s and hold night games. Both clubs used the grounds until 1981 – when the football club relocated to Sydney to become the Sydney Swans and the site was redeveloped into today’s Lakeside Stadium in the 1990s.
