Ninety percent of all Australians call cities home. These regions are so different to their surrounding natural landscapes that they actually generate their own climate. This urban heat-island effect arises from the heavy modification of the land surfaces we live on. For example, dark surfaces absorb significantly more solar radiation, which causes urban concentrations of roads and buildings to heat more than rural areas during the day. Heatwaves are more intensely felt in the cities because of the urban heat-island effect. Extreme heat, rising sea levels and storms are the major threat to urban areas with continued climate change.
