Leonard French

Port of Call, 1956

Catalogue number: 16

screened paint on board

51.00 x 61.00

signed and dated 'Leonard French 56' l.l. signed and bears title on reverse

Provenance: Rudy Komon Gallery, Sydney; Sotheby’s, August, 1992; Ray Hughes Gallery, Sydney, 2010; Private Collection, Melbourne, since then

Note: Leonard French’s major commission in 1956 was seven large panels “The Legend of Sinbad” for the Legend Espresso Bar in Melbourne. Port of Call uses both a different medium (he used enamel at the time) and atypical forms (they tended to be fewer and bolder). It can be seen as referring in its subject to the maritime life of Sinbad and to the travels of Odysseus, which had formed the previous sequence of works, the Odyssey Series, shown at the Victorian Artists Society in 1955.
